Hyphae Mail

Private email, sent through your own Gmail.

Hyphae Mail scrambles your message in your browser before it ever reaches Gmail. Google carries unreadable text. The key goes separately, over an end-to-end-encrypted Matrix message, to the people you choose.

Open Hyphae Mail

You sign in with a Google account. Hyphae Mail asks for one permission: to send email as you.

How it works

  1. You write. Subject and body are encrypted in your browser with a fresh AES-256 key for every send.
  2. Gmail delivers ciphertext. Hyphae Mail sends the scrambled message from your own Gmail address to each recipient. Anyone looking at the email, including Google, sees unreadable text.
  3. The key travels another way. Each recipient who has a Matrix ID receives the key in an end-to-end-encrypted Matrix direct message, and reads the message there.

What Hyphae Mail asks Google for

Send email on your behalf (gmail.send), and your account's email address so the app can show which account is connected.

Hyphae Mail cannot read, list, search or delete any message in your mailbox, and it does not touch your contacts, calendar or files. The access token stays in your browser tab and is sent only to Google. Details are in the privacy policy.

Who it is for

People who want to send a message, or a note to a list of people who expect to hear from them, without handing the content to their mail provider. Recipients without a Matrix ID receive ciphertext only and cannot read the message until they connect one.
